Pupils from Cundall Manor School will be taking to the stage to perform ‘The Secret Garden’ by Frances Hodgson Burnett and adapted by Jessica Swale.

The production will be performed by Year 9 and 10 pupils from the nearby school at the 200-seat theatre on Thursday 24 November at 7pm.

The production promises to be a darker representation of the classic story involving an orphaned aristocratic girl returning to Yorkshire from the Indian Raj. Set in 1910, the Edwardian tale sees Mary on her way to England to live with her distant Uncle in Misselthwaite Manor on the dark and unfamiliar Moors.

As the audience will quickly discover, Misselthwaite is no place for children. Full of dark corners and strange night-time noises, Mary is certain there is more to Misselthwaite than meets the eye.

Will Mary uncover the source of the cries in the night? And will her curiosity lead her to solve the greatest mystery of Misselthwaite, the legend of the Secret Garden?

The performance will be directed by Miss Vile, Head of Drama at Cundall Manor School. She said: “The upper school performance is one of the highlights of the year.

“This year we are taking on a classic story and allowing the performance the opportunity to grow into a darker, more grown-up story.”

Tickets are free and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis on the night. To find out more about the production or the next open morning, contact the school on 01423 360 200.

The festival is in its 110th edition and is an important calendar date for singers and performers from across the north.

Sisters, Flossie and Hattie Attwood performed beautifully to claim a series of awards for their singing within their categories. Flossie topped two categories with a 1st places in the Year 8 and under Vocal Solo and the Year 8 and under Songs from Stage and Film (solo) categories. She also claimed a strong third for the Year 11 and under Unaccompanied Folk Song.

Hattie performed admirably with two second places in the categories Year 6 and under Pop Star Solo and Year 6 Songs from Stage and Film (solo).

Director of Music at Cundall Manor School, Sarah Reece, said: “Flossie and Hattie are great examples of music scholars. They are deeply committed and take every opportunity to fly the flag for Cundall at many competitions and festivals. Well done girls.”

The 7 year olds performed a range of spoken word and music as they put what they have learned over the past few months on show.

Mrs Rodgerson helped organise the event. She said: “The children performed wonderfully. I am sure everyone who came was very proud of what they saw.”

The children ended the evening with a performance of a chant depicting the invasion of Britannia by the Roman Empire. This follows on from Form 1’s recent study of the Romans and their visit to Murton Park.

Cundall Manor joined choirs from Terrington Hall, Aysgarth, York Minster School and St Martin’s Ampleforth, with around 120 voices altogether.

The morning and first part of the afternoon were spent rehearsing in the performing arts centre, before we moved to the church to sing everything that we had learned, in a service which was attended by families and members of the general public.

Director of Music at Cundall Manor, Sarah Reece, said: “The choirs worked really hard and felt exhausted by the end of the afternoon, but rose to the occasion and made the most of this exciting opportunity to sing in the enormous acoustic of Ampleforth Abbey Church.”

A huge well done to all involved in the creating a wonderful day of beautiful music.

FIVE drama pupils preformed the powerful and thought provoking play ‘Chatroom’ by Enda Walsh as part of their GCSE exams in front of a large audience of friends, family and staff from the school.

Drama teacher, Elizabeth Vile said: “The piece explored the theme of cyber-bullying and the dangers it presents to vulnerable teenagers across a range of situations and backgrounds.”

“The actors were highly focused throughout the piece and audience members were really struck with the students’ commitment and acting ability.”

Elizabeth added: “The cast should feel incredibly proud of themselves and of the performance as a whole.”

Lunchtime Concert at Cundall Church
A very enjoyable half hour was had by a most appreciative audience of family and friends watching some of our musicians perform at Cundall Church last Friday lunchtime. Despite the bitterly cold conditions, the children performed extremely well. For many, it was their very first public performance and it was almost too much for Amelia, but she managed to fight off her nerves and play her piece very commendably. There was quite a wide range of music, instruments and voices, and a range of ages from Form 1 through to Form 6. As ever, it was wonderful to hear how the children are progressing and developing their skills and musicianship. Well done to you all.
The pupils in Leckby have been hard at work since September writing, producing and performing their own musical theatre production, “School of Rap”, loosely based on the High School Musical story. Between them all, they have written the script and all the songs, produced the necessary backing tracks, and now they are hard at work rehearsing it for their performance on Thursday 3rd March. To write an entire musical is an amazing achievement. They have had the opportunity to develop their creativity and practise many of the skills required for both music and drama at GCSE. All are welcome to the performance.

14 students from Leckby and Form 6 are well into rehearsals for their extract from ‘Beasts and Beauties: Eight Tales From Europe’ that they will be performing at the ISA Drama Festival on Sunday 13th March 2016 at The Hammond School, Chester. The students will be telling the stories of ‘Beauty And The Beast’, The Three Wishes’ and ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ in a physical and energetic interpretation. These talented students are hoping to emulate the glory of our previous entry, ‘Charlie And The Chocolate Factory’ that won prizes at last year’s festival.
