The Wild Wood
The Wild Wood is an exciting one-acre outdoor learning environment that serves as an enriching classroom for pupils across the whole school. It complements indoor learning with dynamic, hands-on experiences that deepen pupils’ understanding of their academic subjects.
For example, students studying the Stone Age take part in practical activities such as fire lighting, charcoal making, and building survival shelters using natural materials found within the woodland. These immersive tasks vividly bring historical topics to life. Pupils also explore themes like habitats, sustainability, and woodland management, gaining first-hand insight into the natural world.
Mathematical concepts, such as trigonometry, are applied through real-world tasks like measuring the height of trees. Pupils use natural elements—sticks, stones, and more—to explore patterns and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Come rain or shine, classes are held outdoors. The Wild Wood features winding pathways, secluded teaching spaces with wooden seating, bird-watching hides, and even a designated area for axe throwing, offering a unique enrichment opportunity. A pizza hut adds to the experience by serving as a venue for celebrations and community gatherings among day pupils and boarders.
The Wild Wood is a place to explore, discover, and grow—providing meaningful, memorable learning experiences that extend far beyond the traditional classroom.
